Fly Fishing on Norfork Lake
Few experiences are more pleasant than spending a few
hours on Norfork lake searching for trophy stripers and challenging
hybrids with the fly rod. It is not necessary to travel to saltwater to
find big game fly fishing and the variety will surprise even experienced
anglers.
The months of March, April, and May often find stripers
over 20 pounds and hybrids up to 14 pounds chasing schools of shad near
the shoreline. Mixed with these schools are largemouth, Kentucky, and
smallmouth bass as well as white bass and large crappie. The action heats
up again in the fall as water temperatures cool off and the shad move
shallow again. A trophy walleye may be in the mix at this time of year.
Anglers are best served using 8 or 9 weight rods loaded
with intermediate or slow sinking fly lines on good quality reels. Flies
that emulate shad are most productive and Bink can provide local favorite
patterns. It is necessary to cover plenty of water, so be prepared to cast
50 or more feet consistently.
